Rainfall makes a creek out of the newly completed Woodman Avenue green street medians.

This morning’s rainfall makes a creek out of the newly completed Woodman Avenue green street medians.

I just posted an article at L.A. Streetsblog that wouldn’t be out of place at L.A. Creek Freak.

It’s the first part of a series where I’ll be exploring the connections between streets and creeks. I’ll be highlighting various green street projects, this article shows off the recently opened  Woodman Avenue Multi-Beneficial Stormwater Capture Project – a collaboration of The River Project and the City of Los Angeles.

Outstanding. We need projects like this on every school playground as well. Thousands of gallons of rainwater wash uselessly in sheets off the asphalt and into the gutters. I know. I volunteer at two local schools in Long Beach.

  • This is so interesting. I have noticed many streets undergoing this kind of transformation and I admire the look, recognize the use of more succulents, natives and water-conserving plants, but didn’t really think about how they might be instrumental in some water capture. You might be interested in checking out the median strip on Rosemead Boulevard in Pasadena (between Huntington Drive and Foothill). I think there must be tremendous purpose behind all the recent changes. It looks quite “green” to me. I always look forward to what you share. Thank you!

Joe, could it be said that the streets themselves are the most extensive water infrastructure we have? They are, afterall, engineered to convey water.
