Creek Freak reader Joel McKown sent us these photos of North Atwater Park doing its job during today’s rains. For more background on this creek restoration park project, see the post from earlier this week (follow links there for details.)

Be safe out there during the rains – rain-swollen local creeks and rivers can be deadly – but it’s fun to carefully check out some of these rainwater parks while it’s actually raining!
Thanks for posting. I was wondering about this creek today. Looks like it’s doing it’s job. This park is a gem.
I went out there on Monday and the project held up well but there was some areas of slope erosion but that was expected since the slope hydroseed has not established. Additional measures of slope protection (i.e. some concrete) in one area near the outlet to the river maybe required to prevent future issues since planting/root systems cannot be so quickly established.
Joel –
Thanks for providing these great pics during the rains! I will be out there today to see how the plants, paths, etc. held up (among some other things). Hopefully, there minimal damage. Will post once I get back. Thanks again!
Went out there today and saw some nice flows with an oily sheen that seemed to get stopped by a small debris dam of sticks. When will this open? The kids of Atwater are going to love this new feature. David
Sounds like it will open early next year – see Nisith’s (city of L.A. landscape architect) comments here: https://lacreekfreak.wordpress.com/2011/11/15/north-atwater-park-creek-construction-nearly-complete/#comment-6707
