L.A. River Clean-Up and Day of Service Tomorrow
April 29, 2011 § 2 Comments
It’s covered on plenty of sites elsewhere, but Creek Freaks should definitely plan to come to tomorrow’s Friends of the Los Angeles River La Gran Limpieza – the annual Great Los Angeles River Clean-up. Clean 9am to 12noon Saturday April 30th 2011 at over a dozen sites from Long Beach to Tujunga. This year the multi-site event is combined with city of Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa’s Day of Service. The riverly day concludes with a 12n-2pm celebration at Rio de Los Angeles State Park – including a free concert by Ozomatli!
FoLAR’s annual clean-up has definitely been an important event in my personally connecting with our local river. It’s a great day to go and see the most natural parts of the river, to get up-close, to help the river out a bit, and to think about one’s own consumption and how our throw-away culture contributes to so much trash degrading our urban waterways. Go check it out!
Please tread lightly – many water fowl are nesting now – nests and eggs can be well hidden. Please advise all participants to use caution and be alert to signs of nesting birds so they may stay clear of them and not disturb them. Wild birds and their nests are protected by the US Fish & Wildlife Service and it is a crime to disturb nesting birds or their nests. Thank you for helping clean the river!
There were many distressed birds in our section of the Glendale Narrows at Atwater Village. I don’t think the word got out about the nesting birds.
